Athletes from 17 area schools competed for berths in the State Track Meet during the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie. Take a look for your favorite athlete and see who is going to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. For about 15 years, students have had access to a weekend program that drives them home on late, weekend nights. The program might help explain why there are so few car accidents involving North Shore teens on weekends.
Students at New Trier Township High School who go out on weekends to party with friends, maybe even drink, have Safe-Rides to get them home safely and discreetly late at night. The Safe-Rides program is managed by Boy Scouts of America Northeast Illinois Council, and has been run entirely by student volunteers for about 15 years. According to one adult supervisor, who asked to keep his name out of print because, as he put it, "the kids do all the work, I can't take any credit," the Safe-Rides program has prevented car accidents with teen driviers.
