Glenview firefighters and police play charity hockey game at Allstate Arena to benefit local organization.
Several teams of local firefighters and police hit the ice at Allstate Arena Sunday morning before an afternoon Wolves game to benefit local charities. The Wolves provide the venue, but the teams get to decide which charity receives the donations. Sunday, the Glenview team played for Camp I Am Me, a camp for children who have suffered severe burn injuries run by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance. The Glenview team formed nine months ago and regularly plays on Tuesdays against other local fire and police teams. Several of the guys had played in the event before with other teams, which was how they knew about and got involved in playing the event this year. From a pool of 8,000, Jason Ochoa heads to Dallas to compete in T.G.I. Friday’s World Bartender Championship finals.
What could be more fun than mixing drinks and getting paid for it? Nothing, if you ask T.G.I Friday bartender Jason Ochoa. Ochoa works at T.G.I Friday’s Glenview location and recently competed among 8,000 fellow bartenders from 900 Friday’s outposts around the world. He took top prize at the local, regional and divisional levels — each of which includes a variety of drink-making tests that demonstrate stellar bartending skills. Among the challenges, a speed round demands bartenders think on their feet and a two-pour test demonstrates free-pouring expertise. Northbrook girl spends four months in hospital fighting rare immune disorder.
All Lacey Horwitch wants for her birthday is to go home. The 8-year-old from Northbrook, who turns 9 on Jan. 19, has spent the last several months in a hospital bed, undergoing rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, and ultimately, a bone marrow transplant. “She is a little fighter, she does not cry, she does not complain,” says Amy Cassman, a close relative. “This kid is amazing.” Lacey has been hospitalized at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago since August, when she was diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistocytis (HLH).
