According to the Cook County Department of Public Health, a Northbrook man in his 40s has been diagnosed with the virus. A Glenview man, 74, was confirmed with the virus earlier this week.
A man in his 40s is the first confirmed human case of the West Nile virus in Northbrook this year, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health. The man has not been hospitalized. Prior to this most recent case in Northbrook, a 74-year-old Glenview man showed the onset of symptoms beginning July 31, and was confirmed with the virus Aug. 20. There have been 11 total cases reported in Illinois this year. According to David Zazra, spokesman for the North Suburban Mosquito Abatement District, there have already been two confirmed West Nile cases in Skokie and Evanston, one in Glenview, and a blue jay in Wilmette. Fisher and LaMonica will remain co-counsel in the wrongful death suit against Union Pacific after a train derailment and subsequent bridge collapse in Northbrook-Glenview.

In the aftermath of last week's train derailment and the string of young people who passed away last month, Glenbrook North will hold a presentation and discussion to help community members deal with grief. The event, called Tools for Coping, is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. in GBN's Sheely Center. I still remember a news story that came on my family’s TV one day when I was an 11-year-old living in Wilmette. It was about a harrowing freight train wreck in Glenview. The year was 1974. The results of that accident were eerily similar to the one that occurred July 4th; the Shermer Road rail bridge collapsed and, according to the Chicago Tribune, left a pileup containing 22 twisted railcars, bent track, spilled cargo and what was left of the bridge. Fortunately, that time, no one was hurt. Back then, a friend of mine named Eric Lathrop lived near what is now the Metra North Line. A freight train carrying coal from Wyoming to a utility plant in Wisconsin derailed Wednesday, collapsing an overpass bridge near the Northbrook/Glenview border. According to officials, this is the second derailment at this location since 2009.
Update July 6 at 12:10 p.m. Freight service has resumed in one direction along the Union Pacific rail line. Update July 6 at 11:30 p.m. The victims of the collapsed bridge have been identified and their family is pressing charges, the Chicago Tribune reports. Friends identified the victims as Burton Lindner, 69 and Zorine Lindner, 70 of the 100 block of Cornell Court in Glenview. According to the Tribune, the family is planning legal action and attorneys for them appeared in court this morning.
