Glenview Park District honored Olivia Smoliga, senior at Glenbrook High School, and Steve Iida, her coach at the Glenview Aquatic Titan Club, during the Feb. 28 board meeting, Glenview Announcements reported. Smoliga was given a plaque for winning the 100-meter backstroke at the World Short Course Championships in Istanbul on Dec. 15, 2012, while her coach was also recognized by the Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park and Recreation Association with a Community Service award, Glenview Announcement reported. Glenbrook South swimmer wins 100-meter backstroke at World Championships
Glenbrook South’s Olivia Smoliga won the 100-meter backstroke at the World Short Course Championships in Istanbul last week, the Chicago Tribune reports. The event - the 2012 Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) Short Course World Championships - was her first senior level world meet. To qualify for the race, she placed seventh. For the final, she swam a second faster, at 56.64, winning over Denmark’s Mie Oestergaard Nielsen by .43. In all she earned four medals - two gold, a silver and a bronze. Her total made her the second highest medal-getter, only behind Ryan Lochte, who earned eight. She earned the second gold in the 400 relay prelims, the silver in in the women's 50m backstroke, and a bronze in the 4x100m medley. Smoliga …

Seems like the University of Georgia is about to add a national record holder to their swim team. Glenbrook South's Olivia Smoliga, who raced in the state swim finals in Evanston on Saturday, broke the national record in both 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. She finished the 50 in 21.99 seconds and the 100 in 51.43 seconds, CSL Insider reports. She won those races. Oliva Smoliga has a clear goal for the next four years. “The Olympics in 2016 are always in the back of my mind,” said the Glenbrook South student and competitive swimmer. “It’s always been a lifelong goal of mine. Coming off the (Olympic) Trials this past summer, I have more experience." Smoliga, a high school senior, recently announced she will attend the University of George next fall. She says its swim program will help her prepare for the next summer Olympics. “I know I have to take things one step at a time,” the three-time state high-school champion said. A tired but happy Olivia Smoliga arrived home late Tuesday afternoon from the Junior Pan Pacific swimming championships in Hawaii with no break to catch her breath. Hard on the heels of her 100-meter backstroke victory at the outdoor meet in Hawaii, Glenview’s Smoliga hit the books Wednesday at Glenbrook South after missing the first four days of the new school year. She will also be back in the pool Wednesday for practice as the senior captain of the school’s swimming team. Then it’s back on a plane Friday to the Universty of Texas in the first of a series of weekend college visits. Glenview’s Olivia Smoliga, 17, finished 48th overall (56.59) in today’s 100-meter freestyle prelimineraries in Omaha, the Chicago Tribune reports. The rising Glenbrook South senior placed 4th in the women’s backstroke finals Wednesday, missing a spot as an Olympic qualifier by only a few seconds. Smoliga will next compete in the 50-meter freestyle beginning Sunday. She won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles at last season's state meet.
