The park district has been fighting the elusive beetle for three years but 2011 has been especially devastating.
Beetles have come to Glenview. The Glenview Park District has been struggling with the elusive pests for three years, but was hit especially hard this year, Triblocal reported Friday. The Grove's Director Steve Swanson estimates about 500 trees on the 123-acre site—once home to famed horticulturist John Kennicott and his family—have been infested. “We were a little dismayed to see how much infestation there was this year,” Swanson told Triblocal. “It appears these trees have been infested more than five years.” Emerald Ash Borer has been a mounting issue throughout the region for nearly a decade and was first discovered in Glenview in 2008, Director of Natural Resources Robyn Flakne told Triblocal. The Grove National Historic Landmark will present signed copies of Sandra Schlachtmeyer’s "A Death Decoded: Robert Kennicott and the Alaska Telegraph" Friday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m.
In her new book, A Death Decoded: Robert Kennicott and the Alaska Telegraph, Sandra Schlachtmeyer brings a local legend to life. The book, based on Glenview native son and 19th century naturalist and explorer Robert Kennicott, reveals the causes of his sudden death as documented in a 2001 forensic autopsy by Smithsonian scientists. This Friday, The Grove National Historical Landmark, where Kennicott's home and archives are preserved, will present signed copies of the book to the new Genealogy and Local History Room of the Glenview Public Library. Library Director Vickie L. Novak will accept the book donation as an addition to the library's expanded collection of historical resources, according to a Park District press release. Novak will …

An exhibition at The Grove honors explorer and naturalist Robert Kennicott and answers questions about his untimely death.
Rumors about Robert Kennicott's death have circulated for decades. Some contended Kennicott -- the famed naturalist buried in the Grove National Historic Landmark -- was murdered. Others called it suicide and some said he died from hypothermia. Numerous books have been written on the subject, but not one of them ever managed to find definitive evidence, said Steve Swanson, director of historic landmarks. "We did not want to leave doubts out there," he said. "We decided to spend the time that was necessary." The Grove officials decided to end the debate by learning what killed Kennicott, and so they turned to The Smithsonian Institute for help. "More importantly, we asked the Smithsonian Institute to prove he didn't die from what people …
