Tommy Carroll, Glenview's Blind Skateboarder

Carroll, a college student who's been blind since age two, was recently featured in a promotional video for a Dutch sports equipment company.

Perry, a European sporting equipment company, released a video in December featuring Glenview's Tommy Carroll, a college student, blind since two and skateboarding since 10. Carroll was born with a retinal cancer that caused him to go blind, he says in the video.  The video features him describing his hobby, his use of sound to skate and navigate, and the confidence he gets from wearing protective gear. According to McSweeney's, an online literary magazine, Carroll studies journalism and international studies at Northwestern University.  "There were people who discouraged me. They were like, 'There’s no way. You’re going to kill yourself. Blind people can’t skateboard.' So I just ignored them," he told the magazine.  Sign up for the …

Local Skaters Find Shelter From the Snow

Glenview skaters head to the newly opened Asylum Skatepark.

It’s a frigid Friday afternoon in Glenview, with clumps of frost littering the tops of trees and sheets of water and ice glazing the roads and sidewalks. It certainly doesn’t look like the right weather for a brisk skateboarding session in the great outdoors. For most Glenview residents, the snowfall marks the advent of the winter season. For skateboarders on the other hand, it marks the bittersweet end of “skate season.” Luckily, North Shore skaters have recently been blessed with the opening of Asylum Skate Park, an indoor facility located just north in Lake Bluff.
