New Rules Approved to Minimize Injury to High School Football Players

A forum on preventing football head injuries hosted by State Rep. Carole Sente will be held at Vernon Hills High School on Monday, Feb. 25.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently approved new rules for the 2013 football season in an effort to minimize player injuries related to helmets coming off during games. As a follow-up to last year’s rules change requiring players to sit out one play if their helmet comes off while the ball is live, the NFHS Football Rules Committee approved three additional rules that are extensions of that change. “Player safety has been and will continue to be the top priority for members of the NFHS Football Rules Committee,” said Brad Garrett, chair of the NFHS Football Rules Committee and assistant executive director of the Oregon School Activities Association. “These rules changes regarding helmet-less players …

UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

We have another weekly winner in the Patch Athlete of the Week contest.

With 7 votes in the comments section, Niles West's Kyle Colletta was proclaimed the winner. Colletta helped the Wolves to a 6-0 win over Leyden for a Class 4A baseball regional championship. The senior pitcher yielded only six hits and had five strikeouts in the victory. HONORABLE MENTION Leland Later, senior, track and field, New Trier - Later won the Class 3A state championship in the 1600 last weekend. The senior ran a personal best, finishing in 4:09 and beating the next closest competitor by a full 4 seconds. Michal Filipczak, senior, track and field, Maine South - Filipczak won the Class 3A state championship in the 800 last weekend. UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

We had not one, but two Athletes of the Week this time around.

With 25 votes in the comments sections, twin sisters Courtney and Jessica Ackerman of New Trier were named the Patch Athletes of the Week.  The twins doubled up in the distance races at the Class 3A state championships on Saturday. Courtney took second place in the 1600 and was sixth in the 3200 while Jessica was fourth in the 3200 and placed seventh in the 800.  HONORABLE MENTION Alisha Barnaby, senior, track and field, Maine West - Barnaby took eighth place in the shot put for the Warriors, the best finish for Maine West at the track and field state championships. Barnaby threw 40 feet, 6.5 inches in Friday’s preliminary round for her best mark. Keeley Nolan, senior, soccer, Glenbrook South - Nolan had a goal and an assist in the Titans…

GBS Pitcher Wins Patch's Athlete of the Week

The nominee eked out a victory and was named Athlete of the Week.

With 5 votes in the comments section, Glenbrook South's Sully Stadler was named the Athlete of the Week.  Stadler got the win for Glenbrook South in a 3-0 victory over Maine South. Stadler had eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched and the victory over their CSL South rivals snapped Maine South’s 18-game winning streak. HONORABLE MENTION Reggie Murphy, freshman, track and field, Evanston - Murphy was a key contributor in helping the Wildkits win the CSL South conference track meet for the second consecutive season. Her throw of 40-3.5 was good enough to break a school record for the Giants. HONORABLE METNION Sam Koloms, junior, baseball, Glenbrook South – Koloms gave up only four hits in a 4-1 victory over Niles West in a CSL South matchup. Koloms struck out six batters, allowed no earned runs, and improved his record to 4-1 on the season.
