A year ago, readers felt a Northbrook Court jewelry store was right to have an armed security guard. Patch wants to know readers’ views in light of the shootings in Newtown and Oregon.
(Update on Dec. 18 at 5 a.m.) Friday’s murder of 26 people including 20 children by a gunman in Newtown, CT, and more gunplay at a mall outside Portland a few days before prompted Patch to take a new look at the use of an armed guard at C.D. Peacock’s Northbrook Court jewelry store. A year ago, Patch observed the guard and asked readers how they felt. A majority supported the idea. Patch wants to know if recent events have changed minds in the area. Patch is running a new poll and will publish the results next week. Patch contacted Peacock President Bob Baumgardner for a comment. He did not return the call. A year ago, state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) questioned the wisdom of the use of an armed guard in a mall store. Now, she …

Retiring state senator becomes Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary’s top honors.
State Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) received a surprise at lunch Thursday when she attended a regular Deerfield Rotary meeting. As Garrett approaches retirement in January after serving 14 years in the Illinois General Assembly, Rotary surprised the Deerfield native by naming her a Paul Harris Fellow, one of the highest honors the organization can bestow, according to Rotarian Bob Rosenbacher. “A world of peace and good will comes closer to reality today as Susan Garrett becomes a Paul Harris Fellow,” Rotarian and Deerfield Village Trustee Barbara Struthers said presenting the award. Harris was one of the founders of Rotary and the Rotary Foundation. He helped instill the values of selflessness into the organization. Struthers …

Candidates for state Senate talk about choice and experience.
The two candidates hoping to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, opened their campaign offices a mile apart Saturday and wasted no time differentiating themselves from each other. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, the Democratic contender, criticized the lack of government experience of Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, the Republican choice. She claimed he has never been responsible to citizens and taxpayers. Earlier: Pension Reform Awaits State Senate Candidates “I am the only candidate in the race who has held elective office,” Morrison said to more than 50 people at the formal office opening. “I know what it’s like to be accountable to taxpayers and my opponent does not. Dear Editor: I look forward to Memorial Day every year because it gives me the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made to keep America strong and free. Men and women of all socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, from all across the country, have fought courageously in wartime and in peace so that citizens like us can walk safely throughout our communities and our country. Memorial Day is a day where we set aside our differences and stand united to honor the services and achievements of the men and women of the U.S. armed forces who paid the ultimate sacrifice in fighting for our nation. We recognize the principals they stood for and causes for which they gave their lives, and we are forever grateful. …

Morrison, Sumption and Morrison spend time in Highland Park.
Highland Park polling places were a popular spot this morning for all three candidates hoping to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) in the 29th State Senate District. Both West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, one of two Democratic candidates for the seat, and Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, a Republican, spent time at Ravinia School. Friedman, who is unopposed in the Republican primary, voted there and a few hours later Morrison arrived with members of her campaign staff to greet voters. “It’s been great,” Morrison said of her reception by voters at several polling places including Deerspring Pool in Deerfield where she accompanied her daughter, Katherine Morrison, to vote. Morrison cast her …

Sheyman, Schneider trade charges of misleading voters and use of outside money.
Charges of misleading voters and the infusion of outside special interest money have intensified the 10th Congressional District primary battle for the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth). With the primary 11 days away, advertising funded by MoveOn and True Majority PAC questioning Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider’s Democratic bona fides hit local mailboxes Wednesday and Thursday. Schneider is one of four Democrats seeking his party’s nod. Both MoveOn and True Majority PAC support Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, another of the four contenders. The other two, Long Grove business owner John Tree and Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda, have stayed out of the fray. The two mailers, which …

Democratic State Senate candidates agree on many issues but have different ideas on implementation.
Approach rather than policy differences is what distinguished Democratic Illinois State Senate candidates Julie Morrison and Milton Sumption Sunday at a League of Women Voters sponsored debate at the Highland Park Country Club. The two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination in the March 20 primary to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) agree on a number of issues but would differ on ways to implement those ideas. Sumption, a business consultant from Lake Bluff with a background in the financial industry, brings that expertise to bear when approaching issues like pension reform, job creation, services for homeless veterans and dealing with the state’s growing Medicaid costs. For the last 14 years, Morrison, from …

People from all walks of political life join forces to support West Deerfield Township supervisor.
West Deerfield Supervisor Julie Morrison is finding help for her campaign to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) from a variety of places. Morrison’s support from established Democratic politicians, first time student interns and even an independent Republican activist were all evident at the opening of her campaign office Saturday in Highland Park. One person who will be volunteering her support to Morrison is Linda Reed of Northbrook. The two first met when Reed was on the local staff of then Rep. John Porter (R-Wilmette) and Morrison was the former Congressman’s field director. “I’ve returned because of Julie (Morrison),” Reed said at the office opening. “I’m an independent and Julie (Morrison) is right on the …
