It's nearly time for the Glenview Farmers' Market at Wagner Farm to launch its 2013 season — opening date is set for June 22, rain or shine. This Wednesday, the farmers market is hosting a screening of Food Patriots, a 50-minute documentary about "ordinary people taking control of food and creating healthier lives, a less polluted environment, a new sense of community and new jobs," the film's website describes. The screening will be held on Wednesday 7:00 p.m. at the Wagner Farm Heritage Center, followed by an engaging discussion. More than 15 restaurants served dishes inspired by the cured-meat at the inaugural Northshore Baconfest held on April 27 in Glenview.
Bacon-topped sundae, bacon-wrapped shrimp skewer and pork belly sliders were just some of the items people enjoyed during Wagner Farm's first inaugural Northshore Baconfest, which raised funds for Friends of Wagner Farm to help support programs, projects and events at the Glenview farm, Glenview Announcement reported. Dana Kruger, owner of Skokie-based Sweety Pies Bakery, who also participated in the Baconfest held on April 27, created bacon-inspired deserts such as banana Elvis cake topped with bacon bits, and bacon and cheddar scones all month long in anticipation of the event, Glenview Announcement reported. Todd Price, the director of the Glenview farm, is among the 30 members of the 2014 Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program.
Todd Price, the director of Wagner Farm in Glenview, recently took part in the 2014 Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program and says the program helped him gain a better understanding of consumers' role in agriculture and the importance for people to know about food production, Glenview Announcement reported. Don Norton, president and CEO of Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation, which sponsored the program that takes members to Chicago, Washington, D.C., and overseas to study world food systems, says Price was chosen because he’s on the forefront of sharing the important story of agriculture and is where farming intersects with the general public, Glenview Announcement reported. Kids and parents at Glenview's Wagner Farm were all smiles on Saturday, despite all the children walking around with dismembered, straw-filled limbs.
Saturday was the autumn equinox, and what better way to celebrate the fall than by stuffing some old clothes with straw? Perhaps a bit less symbolic than Thanksgiving, but just as filling. Hundreds of people from all over the North Shore and Chicago came to Wagner Farm on Saturday morning to make scarecrows, pet horses and purchase pumpkins.
